Marathon ( pop . 386 )

Marathon is a tiny oasis located on Hwy . 90 just west of the turn for Hwy . 385 south to Big Bend National Park ’ s east entrance . The town has long attracted outdoors enthusiasts to partake in its friendly restaurant and hotel scene , offering welcome respite from long drives and hikes . The Gage Hotel brought new life to town , restoring the historic hotel and adding the beautifully landscaped 27-acre Gage Gardens , a cafe , a fine dining restaurant , a brewery and barbecue , and of course , the V6 Collection , with artwork displayed from the personal collection of hotelier J . P . Bryan throughout the premises . Additionally , V6 Collection specializes in works of original art and photography from well-known Texas artists showcasing the Big Bend region . The Evans Gallery and Klepper Gallery are testaments to the active fine art and fine photography scene . Architecture in Marathon shows the town ’ s wild side . Several hand built papercrete buildings are found throughout town , including the very artistically rendered Eve ’ s Garden Bed and Breakfast on NW 3rd Street , which also features local
art on its brightly colored walls , as well as La Loma del Chivo , a guesthouse on SW 6th Street featuring eclectic world art and a mysterious obelisk on the property grounds .
