“ Davis Mountains II ” by Christa Brothers

Situated on the lonely high plains of the Marfa Plateau , this ethereal town invites long thoughts and contemplative meditations about the bare essence of things . Several roadside attractions are worthy of a stop , including the oversize cutouts of characters from the movie Giant , filmed in Marfa in the 1950s . The exhibit is located seven miles west of town on the northside of Highway 90 . But what really ignites the Marfa vibe , is the local interest in minimalist architectural art , thanks to the influence of the Chinati and Judd Foundations and their many exhibits and events . A walk around town showcases striking historic architecture with shops and galleries hosting local talent . From music and art festivals to speaker series , a multitude of annual events provides opportunities for visitors to get a taste of Marfa ’ s fuss free style . Prada Marfa is the permanent art installation of a Prada store façade , located west of Marfa near the small town of Valentine ( pop . 67 ). Valentine is home to several artists and seasonal pop-up art stands of its own . It ’ s famous for its Post Office cancellation stamp , available each year from February 1 to March 14 , featuring the artwork of a local artist . Back in Marfa , Marfa Farmstand , a farmers market , is open each Saturday from 9:30 a . m . to noon located in the pavilion on E . El Paso Street , and also showcases artisans and their work .
