Alpine ( pop . 5,892 )

From 1921-1950 , Alpine was home to an artist colony , hosting artists of the regionalist style . Several murals were created during that era , one of which can be viewed in the old post office , located across from the county courthouse on North 7th Street . This valley town continues to add to its repertoire of murals
“ Glory Shine ” by Joni Powers and outdoor art , inviting visitors to get lost on an ambling walking tour . A map of the murals , with forty-four locations , is available at Alpine Visitor Center at 106 N 3rd Street . Art galleries are open on , and around , the main strip of Holland Avenue , showing work from dozens of artists on any given day . Alpine Railroad Park , a small public park across from the Amtrak train station , displays a growing number of artworks , including sculptures and a mural , amongst its gardens carefully landscaped with native plants . Murphy Avenue is home to yet another row of galleries and artists , proof that this town is committed to supporting Big Bend arts . The Museum of the Big Bend , located on the campus of Sul Ross State University , hosts multiple exhibits each year , including the western showstopper Trappings of Texas , in its 35th year for 2021 . Alpine ’ s bustling farmers market also showcases arts and crafts , each Saturday from 9 a . m . to noon , on East Murphy Avenue .
